THE AUTHOR PHOTOS

As discussed in our NEW EPISODE, here are the author photos Rider found so…unappealing.

Anybody agree, or do we all think Rider’s been in Hollywood too long?

(Rider would like to add that it doesn’t help that both of these guys have chosen to designate themselves by the ever-so-writerly “two initials.” That’s another pet peeve of his.)

T.C. Boyle: genuine guy or ultimate poseur?

    S.M. Stirling looking stern.

I have to admit that I agree with Rider. Not only does T. C. Boyle seem like a douche in that photo, he just looks hilarious.

Does T.C. Boyle know that the garden has grown through the window and over his body? How long had he been standing there? Is he there still? Quick, someone check!

As for S.M. Stirling… it’s unfortunate. I think that’s all I can say about that one.

HA. I just listened to the podcast about this for the first time this morning, and DAMN. Hilarious pictures. I tend to be a “take the literature on its own and not in context of the writer’s biography” sort of reader, but I don’t think I could have kept reading with a straight face after seeing either of those.

The one thing I’d say for TC Boyle and this picture and Drop City is that if he is one of those guys who is sort of dressing to be a certain character in a certain scene, maybe he’s still smart enough to be able to criticize that. I hope. Haha. I just read a book by SM Stirling myself, and the picture in the back of my book is of this serious old man who looks a lot like every other old balding white male writer whose pictures I have seen at the back of books. This younger him explains a hell of a lot about the stuff he’s chosen to write about. Thanks for sharing.
